Mission
Increase Gross Language Product
We help more people use Japanese well — so they can work and create more.
What is Gross Language Product?
GLP measures the total economic value generated by speakers of a language. It combines how many people speak it with what they produce. GLP shows how language drives global commerce, creativity, and influence.
Background
To pursue our mission effectively, we must address critical challenges that currently limit access to Japanese language learning.
Difficulty
Japanese is the most difficult languages to learn due to its complex writing system, intricate grammar structures, and cultural nuances. Traditional learning methods often fail to address these challenges effectively, leading to high dropout rates.
Teacher Shortage
There's a global shortage of qualified Japanese language teachers. This limits access to quality instruction and personalized feedback, making it difficult for learners to progress beyond basic levels.
Fragmented Resources
Materials are scattered across textbooks, apps, websites, and classes, with inconsistent quality and level alignment.
Our Approach
Steppen uses AI to remove the biggest barriers to learning Japanese. Our platform builds a detailed language profile for every learner, tracking 1,536 dimensions of proficiency. This allows us to create lessons that adapt in real time — replacing rigid level systems with personalized learning paths. By modeling grammar, kanji, vocabulary, and cultural nuance, we make Japanese more approachable without oversimplifying it. And by unifying scattered resources into one coherent experience, we give learners consistent, high-quality guidance — no matter where they are or whether a teacher is available.
